There are 4 nations in the UK:

England ( capital : London )

Scotland ( capital: Edinburgh )

Northern Ireland ( capital: Belfast )

Wales ( capital: Cardiff )

2. How is the UK's flag composed ?

   Why? What is its name? Do you know why?​

The UK’s flag is called the Union Jack. We don’t know why it is called Union

Jack. ( various theories exist to explain its name )

It is composed with the  crosses of the kingdom of England, Scotland and

Ireland.

Il est composé des croix  d’Angleterre, d’Écosse et d’Irlande.

( Le Pays de Galles n’y est pas car lors de la création du drapeau le Pays de

Galles était une province rattachée à l’Angleterre )

England = the red cross of St George

Scotland = the blue cross of St Andrew

Ireland = the red cross  of St Patrick

( Remarque: on l’appelle le drapeau de St Patrick (qui représente l’Irlande )et

pas le drapeau irlandais )

Il ne faut pas confondre:

Great Britain = England + Scotland + Wales

The United Kingdom = Great Britain + Northern Ireland
